My digital portfolio serves as a living collection of products and projects reflecting my accomplishments in education and digital communications. It highlights my journey into digital communications and showcases samples of my best graduate work. Collectively my content will show how I took an idea from concept to reality using a common idea and theme, i.e, Melanated Pearl, to connect all of the academic work in writing and digital communications. The Agnes Scott College Writing and Digital Communications coursework guide students in hands-on learning, providing an opportunity for me to acquire the 21st-century skills in digital design, videography, and coding skills necessary to position myself as a leader and subject matter expert in professional and public fields that require advanced digital communication skills.
As a demonstration of my ability to research and synthesize information, I am presenting the following academic projects as evidence of new skill development.
PITCH DECK
Where The Bag At? Financial Planning with Black Women in Mind: Melanated Pearl Corporation focuses on building new knowledge and capacity for empowering, educating, and uplifting Black Women. There is an absence of resources available to assist black women to understand money and build wealth. Financial literacy among black women is a necessity, this proposal reveals a possible solution.
GRANT PROPOSAL
Where The Bag At? Financial Literacy and Wealth Building for Black Women: Melanated Pearl Corporation has realized that Black Women are growing hungry for a piece of the “American Pie” but often lack the financial “know-how” to build long term success. This grant proposal seeks solutions to increase access and opportunities for Black Women by increasing knowledge of investments and wealth building.
SOCIAL MOVEMENT ANALYSIS
This social movement analysis traces legislation that has helped women advance in the workplace and concludes by arguing Thesis Statement: “Women, who are as equally trained and educated, and with the same experience as men are not getting equal pay making the gender pay gap the most harmful and persistent barrier to women’s economic security.”
SPEAKING SAMPLE
#SUMMIT_UP Social Media Campaign Pitch: Modeled after both the CSU-Chico and HPS social media campaigns, members of the graduating class of 2019, their parents, and Agnes Scott faculty and staff will be asked to “sum up” the impact they feel the SUMMIT curriculum has had on the graduating senior. This social media campaign highlights the shared experiences of ASC students as it relates to the SUMMIT.
TRANSMEDIA PROJECT
Using transmedia digital storytelling Melanated Pearl explains how many of the circumstances that lead to an exclusive focus on men and boys are, in fact, directly related to the social-economic challenges facing their mothers, and those, in turn, are directly related to some of the challenges facing girls. Focusing on the black female experience, Melanated Pearl Corporation seeks to work collaboratively with community leaders in a coordinated, comprehensive neighborhood revitalization effort to help families break the cycle of incarceration by promoting transformation and innovation through reflective learning experiences that reduce recidivism. Melanated Pearl suggests that continuing the practices of 1 in 13 GA Justice, we will ensure most Georgia citizens are denied access to the “American Dream”.
PERSUASIVE CAMPAIGN
Melanated Pearl Corporation presents the Bridge Fund “I’m in for $10” The “I’m in for $10″ Bridge Fundraiser launched in October 2019 with a goal of raising $1,000 in 3 months. Melanated Pearl Corporation targets and seeks to help women systematically trapped in poverty-wage employment also known as the working poor. Knowing what we already know about poverty in GA, we believe a self-funded movement is essential to our collective success.
SHORT FILM
CLICK PDF to view the Short Film “The Genius I Know” on YouTube. Malik Perry is a 21-year-old adult black male (twin) living with autism. This video essay gives a sneak peek into the life of “The Genius I Know”. Born at 24 weeks only weighing one pound 9 ounces, the film highlights the power of accepting one’s exceptionality as a strength. My Digital Storytelling course challenged me to use video to tell a story and highlight an issue important to me. As a mother of a gifted black male living with autism, I decided to blend Malik’s moments with the Ted Talk where LaChan Hannon asked the question: How does race influence how we see autism and the perception we have about our young, gifted and black children around the world? This film highlights the strengths of Malik’s exceptionality and reveals how our family accepts his transition into adulthood.
RESEARCH PAPER
Mass Incarceration, Melanated Pearl and the Transmedia Social Justice Campaign: 1in13 GA Justice-One Man’s Journey. There is an assumption that the conversation about black women and girls impacted by mass incarceration is happening somewhere, in some communities, or at some other organization, but it turns out these conversations rarely if ever, held until now.
